Wildlife, Chef's Sampler, Shrimp Boil, And Concerts Make Full Month's Activities

February used to be such a quiet, peaceful, and sometimes boring month around here. Then folks around here remembered Mardi Gras, the Dixie Theatre began scheduling their season to coincide with snowbirding, the folks in Wakulla put together a few events and the next thing you know the calendar of events is chock full. Hmmmm, stay home and be bored? Get out and have some good clean fun? Where did you put my keys?
Things get underway Thursday, February 4 at 7:30 at the Dixie Theatre as one of the best storytellers in years, Mary Fears, presents her Celebrate Black History. Sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council, this performance is free to the public. Mary Fears specializes in telling stories based upon historic documents, rather than fictionalized versions of African-American History, and presents a compelling program anyone interested in the African-American Experience will want to attend. For more information check out www.dixietheatre.com.
Saturday, February 6 from 11am - 4pm the folks at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge will hold the 4th Annual Wildlife Heritage & Outdoors Festival connecting people to the outdoors through recreation and history. Over 30 exhibitors and demonstrations, plus tours and talks. Children's Passport activity for prizes; wagon tours; historical Lighthouse tours; turkey calling contest, and much more! Demonstrations, exhibits, and children’s activities that cover woods, water, hunting, fishing, bird watching, history and more will make for a full day for the whole family. For more information call 850 925-6121.
Also on February 6 the Friends of St. Joseph Bay Preserves will be holding their annual Winter Bay Day. (Continued)

The Forgotten Coast of Florida lies along the Panhandle. It is bounded on the West by Mexico Beach, St. Joe Beach and Port St. Joe. Going East you come to Simmons Bayou, Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, and The City of Apalachicola on the banks of the Apalachicola River. Continuing east you come to Eastpoint, St. George Island, Carrabelle, Lanark Village, St. James Island, St. Teresa Island, and Alligator Point in Franklin County, FL. As you cross the Ochlockonee River on Highway 98 you enter Wakulla County, FL and Ochlockonee Bay, Mashes Sands, Panacea, Live Oak Island, Shell Point and St. Marks. The St. Marks Lighthouse and nature preserve is the easternmost place on the Forgotten Coast. Each area is different, and all are uncrowded Natural Wonders.
